Clever use of colour, materials and design elements combine to create an apartment block that is actually three separate buildings, in keeping with the scale and character of the area and stunningly contemporary at the same time.
"The design was a deliberate attempt to break down the scale of the building,” said architect Allan Wright, of Architecture+."
"It has two double frontages and one single, and they are treated quite differently. They appear differently through the use of colours, glazing, balconies and different facades."
Developer Craig Stewart, of Stratum Group said they wanted a very contemporary building that made a positive statement in Oriental Bay and reflected where Wellington City Council is trying to get design going.
"The use of different elements and colour have been a very integral part of achieving that design statement," he said.
"The city is becoming more and more focused on achieving good design outcomes. Because of its location, this building is a leading example of how things could be done. We have achieved it."
The 16 apartments in the block, on Oriental Parade, are called Blanc, Dune and Marina. The middle block (Dune) has four levels above a ground level parking floor and the other two have three levels.
Dulux Enviro2 was chosen for the Penthouse and three other units.
Pera Simcock, of JMA Decorators, the painting contractors for the job, highly recommends Enviro2. "We found it an excellent product, it was good for touch ups and the sheen level was perfect for big areas with critical light. It hides a lot – and it was good to use – the smell disappears after a couple of minutes. We’d definitely recommend it. "It was a beautiful paint to work with."
